The Queer Fool

Fool Song

I am the foolish Fool:
I am one who has been
through the cave backwards,
I am one who has stepped
off the high cliff and
still not reached the ground.
I have no trappings, few possessions.
I am one who stands exposed
before the world.

I am the Queer Fool.
I am one who is playing
on the edge of gender:
I have lost my career,
by speaking the truth.
I am one who is leaping, shouting with laughter,
out of the boxes
of sexuality.

My power comes from within.
I speak of things
that many hold taboo.

I am the holy Fool.
I have danced through the tarot
from one end to the other,
bounding across the centuries.
I have danced in the place
where laughter turns to fear.
I have danced in the place
between death and the grave.
I have danced in the place
where all the souls are saved.
I have danced in the place
where all the masks are played.

 STRONG

Remember how

You came around

When the school sent us down

Remember the things

We talked about

When your friends weren't around

With every brand new term

You were back with your old friends

And only came back to my door

When the term time ends

I may be a fool

With my painted face;

A joke at school

I may be a clown

Inviting laughter

When they kick me down

But make no mistake

Lest you've got me wrong

Make no mistake

I am strong

It's funny how

You come around

When you're on your way down

It's funny how

You get in touch

Once the circus has left town

With every brand new scene

You're off, making brand new friends

And only come back to my door

When all the parties end

And I'm the grand guignol

Pull my strings

I play any role

The scape-goat through time;

A patterned jester

For your front line

But make no mistake

Lest you've read me wrong

Make no mistake

i am strong

Make no mistake

Lest you've got me wrong

Make no mistake

I am strong
